Professor Lemuel Muhammad

Professor Lemuel Muhammad was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 14, 1971. He began training in martial arts in 1985 at the age of 14. His first teacher was Sensei Gregory Myrick, 5th Degree black belt in Shorei Goju-Ryu Karate. Sensei Myrick was instrumental in Professor Lemuel developing a strong foundation in martial arts. Professor Lemuel Muhammad later studied briefly with now Hanshi Larry Tankson from 1992, until 1994. In 1995 he met and began with Professor Anthony Muhammad as he was known back then, now Grandmaster Abdul Azziz Muhammad (GMAAM). Professor Lemuel Muhammad has trained in VSK Jiujitsu for 30 years and been a senior master of the system for the last 20 years.

Professor was also blessed to train with Dr. Moses Powell, GMAAM’s teacher from 1996 until 2005, when Dr. Powell made his transition. Professor received his black belt in VSK Jiujitsu in 1999, gaining a 1st degree in Vee Jitsu Te, Sanuces and Kumite Ryu simultaneously. Through consistent training and dedication, Professor Lemuel was quickly promoted to 4th degree black belt in 2004 and received the title Shihan, which means Master Teacher. Professor Lemuel then founded The VSK Jiujitsu Institute of Self Defense in 2006. Professor Lemuel retired from competition a 10-time Black Belt Grand Champion. In 2011, he received perhaps the greatest honor a martial artist can achieve when he became a Black Belt Hall of Fame induction recipient, an honor he would received once again in 2019.

After many years of exemplary work promulgating the system of VSK Jiujitsu, Professor Lemuel has become the most prolific master Grandmaster Abdul-Azziz Muhammad has ever produced. On September 14, 2019, Professor Lemuel Muhammad was promoted to the rank of 6th degree black belt and received ceremonial throws, customary in Jiujitsu from the legendary Soke Li’l John Davis.

Professor Lemuel Muhammad has attained several prestigious awards and trained thousands of students and in 2018, he opened the largest martial arts training facility in the history of the family of VSK Jiujitsu, Martial Arts World. This training facility is located in the midwest region of the United States. Professor has written two books: “VSK Jiujitsu Basics” (First and Second Edition) and “VSK Jiujitsu: Movement and Timing” and produced a plethora of exemplary training materials.

In December 2024, Professor Lemuel Muhammad declared and established his own martial arts system, Jigokan® Jiujitsu. He functions as its Grandmaster but chooses to maintain an operational title of Professor as he oversees the day to day operation and all Self Defense Instruction at Martial Arts World. Professor Lemuel hosts an annual self defense training workshop in March and he is available for seminars and consultations.
